Sister Michele Smith

I was born Michele Smith, the third child of seven. I attended St.John the Baptist School in a little town called Manayunk.  Throughout school, I admired the sisters who taught me.  The Sisters in my parish were awesome women who prayed hard, worked hard, and had fun.

I attended Roxborough High School.  During that time, I started the group called Junior Catholics in Action for the 6, 7, 8 grades students at Saint John the Baptist School.  We basically prayed and gave service throughout the Parish and Community.

September 8, 1973, was the beginning of my journey as a Sister, Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. After a sixth month postulancy, an intensely spiritual canonical year, and a year as a senior novice, I thought I was ready to conquer the world. My first mission was Holy Innocents, where I taught third grade for three years. I was then off to Saint JeromeTamaqua, for two years to teach second grade.

The next assignment was St. Cecilia's for second grade. Three years later, I was  teaching second grade again at St. James, Falls Church, VA. Another two years would pass before I arrived in Exton, PA, at Saints Philip and James for third grade. After three years, I went to St. Barnabas School in Southwest Philadelphia for five years to teach sixth grade Language Arts.

The next part of my journey led me to St. Pius X School in Norfolk, VA, to teach 6, 7, 8-grade Religion and Language Arts.  From Norfolk, I traveled back up North to be Principal at Assumption BVM, West Grove, PA. Much to my regret, the Sisters left West Grove two years later, and then it was off to St. Margaret School in Reading, PA. 15 years later, I was assigned to be the principal at Saint Agnes.

As a Sister Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I was privileged to receive a BA from Immaculata College (now University) and a Master's Degree from West Chester University.
